Confessions con carne
So I have a confession that for some reason I am feeling guilty about. I worked late the other night hanging cabinet doors with Lloyd and when we got home, Becky made chili stacks for dinner. Thats right, chili con carne. For those of you who don't habla espanisho, it means....con...meat. She offered to make my usual black beans but I was too hungry to wait. I feel bad, but it was the only time I have messed up so far. Today was the first time I had a hard time with the new goal. We got done playing ultimate frisbee and decided to go grab a quick lunch. As we were trying to decide where to go I asked if anyone had ever eaten taco truck. Nobody had. So I said "let's go." On the way there I came to a realization that I couldn't have a soda with my taco and was really bummed out....that's when it hit me, I couldn't even have a taco. My day was shattered. I got a vegetarian burrito instead and it was actually super delicious. Avocado seems to be an excellent meat replacement. I had a vegetarian subway sandwich and really enjoyed that as well. For all of you who have never had Quorn brand fake chicken patties...you should. They taste every bit as good as real chicken patties. I had them on a kababs yesterday and spiced them up and it was oh so tasty. Good luck everyone with your goals. This has been fun so far.

So far so good with a little bit of s'mores
Chelsy and I doing quite well on our goals.
We have used our re-usable shopping bags a number of times now and are surprised at how much they can fit.
We went camping over memorial weekend with Chelsy's sister and her in laws.
Chelsy's sister Krista met her husband Mike Di Lello dancing at BYU. I learned this weekend that
Chelsy's brother in law Mike has a brother named Ryan Di Lello
whom some of you might have seen on So You Think You Can Dance season 6.
This couple didn't camp with us but two of Mike's other brothers did and we had a good time sleeping in tents, roasting things over the fire and even shooting an assault rifle in Hobble Creek Canyon.
Of course the other couples brought some sweets and stuff for s'mores and we did good at eating our own snacks that we brought. I think Chelsy could
tell I was dying to have a s'more and she let me have one. She had one too.
But I think only a s'more a week is pretty commendable.
I will post a note on facebook summarizing the honeymoon and settling into our new home.
Check there for the update!

Finally Posting!
Okay, so I am finally announcing our contribution to the "Can't Wipe" campaign.
It took a while for us to come up with what we were going to change in our lives. But after some thought, discussion and peer pressure, we have all come up with something!
Mike has decided to stop drinking caffeine and is considering giving up soda all together. It has been over a week and he is caffeine free! And he hasn't had a soda since Sunday!
Leigha has decided to give up caffeine and to include reading the Book of Mormon each day. So far she is caffeine free, but she is still trying to come up with reading time.
My kids decided that the best thing for me to give up is swearing. So for three months, every swear word I say will cost me a dollar. The kids will split the swear fund at the end of the three months. In the last 12 days I have only lost $7!!! Pretty good, huh!
I also am going to try and be healthy, including exercise and drinking more water.....and it's kind of a rollover from preparing for my bike trip with Isabelle. But I'm counting it! I have ridden my bike for the last 3 days for a total of 12+ miles and I have drunk 2 gallons of water since Monday!
Jakey says he is giving up eating vegetables and wearing clothes. His idea, encouraged by Mike's hysterical laughing. He has been wearing clothes though so that may end up being a happy ending for all involved.
As far as eating vegetables goes.....he never eats them anyway, so he may need to switch that one around and eat a vegetable every day......but probably not.
So....that is the Salvitt's contribution so far!!!
Wish us luck!

CAKE!!!
Yesterday I made a cake without refined sugar! And believe it or not, it was actually really good. I used natural applesauce and 100% apple juice concentrate and a little agave to sweeten it. It only needed a little bit of oil because I was using so much liquid. It was a fun experiment. And we topped it with strawberries and blueberries. If anyone wants the recipe, feel free to ask me.
I love fruit sugar! So far we've done pretty good at not eating refined sugar except for Saturday, David "accidentally ate cheesecake" and I "knowingly forgot that chocolate had sugar in it"...probably because we weren't together to support each other. Other than that we've been good and I've enjoyed creating sweet things using fruit. I'm going to try using honey. As for plastic bags....we'll get back to you on that one.

Where's the beef?
So, I wanted to update everyone on how my vegetarianism is working out. Surprisingly, I have liked it so far. I have fallen in love with vegetarian pizza...especially the homemade kind. I haven't had any cravings for meat yet, other than forgetting and almost eating a piece of pork from Becky's sandwich. Good thing I had people looking out for me. In the first week I tried to substitute fake meat products but I realize that I don't really need to do that in most applications. They all taste fine but the only one that was really worth it was the garden burger at Applebees. That was delicious!! The only down side to this is that I haven't lost any weight that I put on from the food I ate while everyone was here. I was hoping that cutting out meat would do the trick...I guess I should go the sugarless route,....soon. As far as soda goes, I haven't craved that yet either. I'm sure once we go to our first bbq, I will feel differently.
Day 10 for me
10 days with no soda and waking up at a decent hour. Sharing a room with the kids on this trip has made my schedule easier to keep, but all the travelling has opened my eyes as to just how much I depend on soda/caffeine to keep me awake during the day. I've got to work on making time for breakfast every day so I get off on the right foot. Sheesh... just look at what you did. My small, specific goals are spilling over into everything else. What a sticky mess! This is totally what happened with that last Indiana Jones movie.

Ok, a few days late...
My plans of starting this Monday were foiled when Chelsy baked a batch of delicious chocolate cookies on Sunday. There was no way I could down all of them in one evening (well...)
so here I am on Wednesday morning with all sugary cookies and cereals gone.
Chelsy successfully started on Tuesday and attempted to make a salad with apple juice concentrate in lieu of dressing. It was very apple-y and good.
We forgot our re-usable shopping bags when we went to Wal-mart on Monday so we might just leave them in the car for the future.
Chelsy has already been craving refined sugars and sweets like no other but I am having no such cravings because I just woke up and just started. More later

Dear Matt & Julia,
I will never forgive you for motivating me. Ever. So, as I wake up at a decent hour every morning and ignore the beckoning call of soda throughout the day, I will also be plotting my revenge. Sweet, sweet revenge. No one improves my quality of life and gets away with it. Watch your back.

Tofurkey
So we all have different things that we are giving up. I am giving up meat and soda. Becky is giving up soda and purchasing junk food. (this doesn't mean she can't eat the supply we already have) but it is dwindling fast. Keilani and Sadie are giving up soda and watching movies (other than one on Friday nights).
So far, we haven't had any soda and I haven't had any meat. I thought I would haven't missed meat. I tried tofurkey, which isn't that bad on a sandwich. I am not necessarily trying to replace meat, but wanted to try out the alternatives in my first week. I also had tofu fajitas. They were also good but lacked the right texture. I feel good though because normally in a weeks time, a chicken might be dead for my sake. So enjoy your extra three months little buddy!

I'll start it off
While the word gets around and until everyone successfully joins the thread,
Chelsy and I decided to set a start date for us two.
Monday May 16th.
We are giving up plastic grocery bags and refined sugars.
Refined sugars are in almost everything by the way.
It might be a work in progress, especially since I love cookies so much.
We currently have 3 reusable shopping bags but might add a 4th or 5th
depending on how many groceries we'll be buying.
It will be a great way to start using/remembering to bring them.
Good luck to everyone!
